Pinus leucodermis

P. heldreichii H. Christ (= Pinus leucodermis Antoine)

Nome comune: Bosnian pine

A tree species found in specific areas in the mountains of Basilicata and Calabria in Italy, as well as in the Balkans. It can reach a height of 20 m, rarely growing larger. The Bosnian Pine is a relict species from the last glaciation period. It is a symbol of the Pollino National Park, in Calabria, and is typically found at altitudes between 600 and 1800 m. In Italy, it often colonizes the most rugged and inaccessible areas. The epithet leucodermis, which is used to describe this pine, refers to the witish color of the trunk's surface.
