13. Mediterranean scrubland

This area includes some characteristic species of the dense evergreen shrubbery found in our coastal regions. The plants in display demonstrate typical adaptations aimed at reducing water loss through transpiration, such as leaf surface reduction or the presence of thickened cuticles, hairs, or waxes. These adaptations are crucial as they enable plants to survive the arid summer period of Mediterranean areas.

Among the numerous species displayed here, noteworthy examples include the strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo), carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua), dwarf palm (Chamaerops humilis), tree spurge (Euphorbia dendroides), myrtle (Myrtus communis), wild olive (Olea oleaster), mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus), holm oak (Quercus ilex), rough bindweed (Smilax aspera), and Spanish broom (Spartium junceum).
